Voluma® is the newest hyaluronic acid filler to the Juvederm family of products. It was FDA approved for use in the US in late 2013. It has been used safely for a longer period of time in Canada and Europe.
Voluma’s chemical properties make it more robust than Juvederm Ultra® and Ultra Plus®. Due to its greater amount of hyaluronic acid chain crosslinks, it has superior lifting capacity, while at the same time its unlinked hyaluronic acid chains impart a softness and pliable quality. Voluma is injected deeper into the skin than the other hyaluronic fillers. Voluma can truly lift or reinflate sunken areas of the mid face while feeling soft and natural. It can truly give you a liquid face lift! The effect is immediate and can last up to 2 years.
Where can Voluma be injected?
Your physician will determine the best area of placement to give you the maximum “lift.” Typically, Voluma is injected deep along the cheekbones in the mid face to return the youthful upper fullness to the face. This in turn decrease the appearance of the nasolabial folds, tear troughs and jowls. Voluma can also be used on the lower and lateral face. Voluma is best used to lift and impart fullness rather than smooth out a specific line as it placed deep into the skin. It can be combined with other hyaluronic acid fillers to achieve complete facial correction.
What are the possible side effects and downtime following Voluma placement?
Like the other hyaluronic acid fillers, Voluma has a high level of safety in the hands of our physicians. Mild swelling and bruising are possible. Some patients may experience soreness a few hours to days after the injection in the area of placement. Any unwanted results can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
